Carlsberg Chairman Flemming Besenbacher to welcome 1,000 young talents to Singapore for world’s largest sustainable development innovation lab

Co-founder of UNLEASH, Professor Flemming Besenbacher, who also serves as Chairman of the Carlsberg Foundation and Carlsberg Group, will welcome 1,000 carefully selected young talents to Singapore tomorrow for the second UNLEASH global innovation lab.

From May 30 – June 6, millennial thought leaders from more than 100 countries will collaborate to create ideas and solutions to help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Speaking about UNLEASH, Flemming Besenbacher said:

“I am a big believer in young people’s ability to use their knowledge, creativity, passion and visionary ideas to rethink solutions and solve some of the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges. We have gathered an incredibly diverse group of young and dedicated talents to co-create innovative solutions to the SDGs. I’m looking forward to welcoming the new group of talents to Singapore and to cement UNLEASH’s status as a global and influential movement for the SDGs.”

During the inaugural UNLEASH held in Denmark last year, 1,000 talents from 129 countries created 197 solutions and are now being supported by the UNLEASH ecosystem of investors, experts, mentors and more than 200 partner organizations from all over the world.

Carlsberg talents

Supported by the Tuborg Foundation, Carlsberg will send a number of its young talents to Singapore to take part in UNLEASH. Six of these bright employees from markets including Denmark, France, Poland, Russia and Vietnam have been selected through an internal global competition, and will put their talents to use at the innovation lab.

Young people leading the way

Earlier this year, the Carlsberg Group announced the launch of the Carlsberg Young Scientists Community aimed at addressing some of the world’s major challenges around climate change and water scarcity, focusing specifically on helping to deliver on the Group’s ambitious sustainability programme, Together Towards ZERO.

Launched in June 2017, Together Towards ZERO calls for strong action in the face of complex sustainability challenges such as climate change, access to water resources and public health concerns. It consists of four major ambitions – ZERO carbon footprint, ZERO water waste, ZERO irresponsible drinking and a ZERO accidents culture – each with individual targets for 2022 and 2030 respectively.

Together Towards ZERO was developed in partnership with leading global experts, using a science-based approach. It is aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals and with the Paris Agreement’s more ambitious goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
